RepRap Mendel: Prologue
by George on Jul.18, 2011, under Misc, Projects, RepRap Mendel
3D printing is one of the coolest, most significant technological developments of the last 5 years. A major driver of this development has been the availability of open source 3D printer platforms.
Of these platforms, the RepRap platform is one of the most noteworthy. A video describing the RepRap 3D printer is featured below:

Excited by the possibilities of 3D printing, I set out on a long trip to adding 3D printing to my list of capabilities. It’s been a long journey thus far, starting way back in March with an engineering collaboration with Thingiverse user mraiser that got me a set of 3D-printed plastic parts for the RepRap Mendel printer.
From there, it was a matter of obtaining the non-plastic parts needed for the RepRap (and associated extruder). Earlier this month, I ordered those parts from Mendel-Parts.com. They’re a good service, and take care of sourcing all of the parts for you for a little extra money (saves on shipping costs and hassle). I got my shipment notice today, and am eagerly awaiting around the house for the parts to arrive.
Stay tuned for more exciting developments!

[...] Earlier last week, I received the last of the parts I needed to build a RepRap Mendel. When finished, the printer will be able to fabricate 3D parts out of plastic, opening the door for mechanical design aspects of current and future NBitWonder projects. Eager to get started, I set out building the device. [...]
